About the Role

A legal assistant offers administrative and clerical support to lawyers, law firms, and legal departments, with a focus on document management, scheduling, and communications. They perform many of the same functions as paralegals, but with a greater emphasis on administrative chores rather than substantive legal work.
Organize and preserve physical and digital information, as well as prepare and proofread legal papers.
Managing calendars, scheduling appointments, and communicating with clients, court staff, and other legal offices.
Helping with legal research, compiling case facts, and preparing papers for trials and hearings.
Communicating with clients, answering queries, and providing status updates on cases.

Requirements

-Legal assistants typically begin their careers with an associate's degree in paralegal studies or a related discipline.


-Employers often prefer or demand a bachelor's degree, which could be in legal studies, paralegal studies, or related fields.


-Employers may consider candidates with a high school education or GED who have appropriate experience and on-the-job training.


-Certificates: Some state bar associations offer paralegal certificates, such as CLA, which might be advantageous.


  • Key Skills and Qualifications:

Legal assistants require strong organizational skills to efficiently manage case files, deadlines, and documentation.


-Effective communication skills are necessary for working with clients, attorneys, and other legal professionals.


-Computer Skills:

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and legal software (document management systems, legal research databases, and so on) is critical.
